Top 5 motorcycle roads to ride in Norway

Discover Norway’s majestic nature from the saddle of a motorcycle. Norway is known worldwide for its dramatic fjords, high mountains, remote plateaus and rugged coastal roads. Together, these landscapes create some of the best motorcycle roads Norway has to offer.

This list highlights five motorcycle roads and regions that combine strong riding character, technical sections and outstanding scenery. While some of these roads can see traffic during peak season, they generally provide a more rider focused experience than classic tourist hotspots. The common factor is that the riding itself remains the main focus.

All of these roads are part of our Road to Ragnarok, a guided Norway motorcycle tour operated by Fjordbound. The real hidden gems of this fjord motorcycle tour are best experienced when riding the full route as one complete journey.

Lysevegen

Between Lysebotn at the end of the Lysefjord and Suleskard in southern Norway.

Lysevegen climbs nearly 900 metres from the fjord landscape of Lysefjord up into the surrounding mountains. The road features 27 tight hairpin bends, narrow sections and limited visibility in several places.

This is a technical mountain road that demands focus and precision. Tunnel sections on the descent toward the fjord create a strong contrast between enclosed rock and open mountain scenery. For many riders, Lysevegen is one of the most intense and memorable sections of a Norway motorcycle tour through fjords and mountains.

Aurlandsfjellet, the Bjørgavegen road

Between Aurland by the Aurlandsfjord and Lærdal in western Norway.

Aurlandsfjellet is a classic high mountain road that rises to around 1300 metres above sea level. The route moves gradually from fjord scenery near Aurlandsfjord into open high mountain terrain with long sightlines and smooth, flowing curves.

Weather can change quickly in the mountains, and the road is typically open during summer and early autumn. When conditions are right, this section delivers a calm and rhythmic ride that fits naturally into a guided motorcycle tour Norway focused on fjords and high mountain roads.

County road 520

Between Røldal in Ullensvang and the E134 near Seljestad.

County road 520 crosses an inland mountain region defined by wide valleys, open plateaus and alpine terrain. Compared to more famous fjord motorcycle tour routes, this mountain road often experiences more moderate traffic.

The road alternates between open sections and tighter sequences of corners, creating a steady and engaging riding rhythm. This makes it a strong example of the best motorcycle roads Norway offers away from the main tourist corridors.

County roads 723 and 724

Side roads from the Olden and Loen area in Stryn municipality, leading toward Briksdalen and Kjenndalen.

These narrow valley roads lead deep into western Norway’s fjord landscape, surrounded by steep mountain walls, waterfalls and glacial rivers. Both roads end near glacier areas, reinforcing the feeling of riding directly into the landscape.

The pace is naturally lower due to road width and terrain, but the experience is immersive and focused. With limited through traffic, these routes are a core part of a well balanced fjord motorcycle tour through western Norway.

Slådalsvegen

Between Lesja and Vågå in central Norway.

Slådalsvegen is a high mountain crossing with gravel surface along much of the route. The surrounding landscape consists of open plateaus, rounded mountains and long distances between settlements.

Traffic is generally light, and the sense of remoteness is strong. This road adds variety and contrast to a Norway motorcycle tour, especially for riders interested in adventure and allroad riding beyond paved mountain passes.

Road to Ragnarok

Road to Ragnarok is Fjordbound’s guided motorcycle tour through Norway. The route is built around some of the best motorcycle roads Norway has to offer, passing through fjords, mountains, high plateaus and selected coastal regions.

Rather than focusing on individual landmarks, the tour is designed as a complete fjord motorcycle tour where riding quality, landscape variation and route flow work together over multiple days.
